01 / BASICS

Core Concepts

First clarify what the client, core, protocol, and subscription each handle. Similar names do not mean the same functional layer; when troubleshooting, identify whether the failure is in configuration management, proxy takeover, or the connection itself.

What are V2Ray, v2rayN, and v2rayNG?

V2Ray generally refers to the protocols, cores, and tools associated with Project V. v2rayN is a desktop GUI client for Windows, macOS, and Linux that can use the Xray or V2Fly core; v2rayNG is an Android GUI client that primarily uses the Xray core. The client manages subscriptions, nodes, and system proxy settings, while the core handles connections and routing.

Which client should I choose as a first-time user?

v2rayN is the usual choice for Windows, macOS, and Linux desktops, while v2rayNG is generally used on Android. If an Android configuration specifically requires the V2Fly core, v2flyNG is also an option. The client is only the configuration interface; successful connections still depend on complete node protocol, address, port, transport parameters, and subscription status.

Can VMess, VLESS, Trojan, and Shadowsocks be imported together?

Yes. A client can keep nodes using different protocols in the same list, with each node storing its own protocol fields. After importing, check that the protocol, transport method, and TLS or REALITY parameters were recognized correctly. If the subscription includes fields the client does not understand, updating the client and core before importing is usually the safest approach.

What is the difference between a subscription link and a single-node link?

A subscription link usually contains multiple nodes and lets the service provider update node names, addresses, and settings centrally. A single-node link describes only one connection. Subscriptions are better for ongoing maintenance and bulk updates, while single-node links work well for temporary imports or targeted testing. After adding a subscription, you still need to run a subscription update before the nodes appear in the client.

Does a client showing Connected mean every app will use the proxy?

Not necessarily. Connected usually only means that the core has started and loaded the current node. Whether app traffic goes through the proxy also depends on the system proxy, TUN mode, the app’s own proxy settings, and routing rules. Test first with a browser through the system proxy; apps that ignore system proxy settings require their own proxy configuration or, when appropriate, TUN mode.

02 / INSTALLATION

Installation & Setup

Installation depends mainly on the platform, processor architecture, and import method. If nodes do not appear, do not switch routing modes immediately. First confirm the link type, subscription update result, and the current list’s group filter.

How do I import a subscription link into v2rayN?

Open v2rayN’s subscription group settings, add a subscription, and enter a recognizable note together with the complete subscription URL. Save it, then run Update All Subscriptions. When the update finishes, open the server list, select a node, and set it as the active server. If the list is still empty, check that the subscription is enabled, the group filter is not hiding nodes, and there are no stray spaces at either end of the URL.

What should I do if no node appears after scanning a QR code in v2rayNG?

First confirm that the QR code contains a node link or subscription content the client can recognize, rather than an ordinary webpage URL. Grant camera permission and scan again, or copy the original link and import it from the clipboard. After importing, check the configuration list in the upper-right corner. A format error usually means the provider needs to generate a complete link again.

Should I choose the arm64 or universal Android package?

Most mainstream Android phones released after 2015 use 64-bit ARM processors, so arm64 is usually the preferred package and has a smaller file size. Choose universal if you cannot confirm the processor architecture, the device is older, or the arm64 package is reported as incompatible. Both packages provide essentially the same features; the difference is the range of processor architectures they include.

Should I use the v2rayN Desktop edition or the classic WPF edition?

The Desktop edition uses a newer cross-platform interface and suits users who want a similar workflow across desktop systems. The classic WPF edition is mainly for Windows and is closer to established usage patterns. For a first installation, try the Desktop edition; Windows users with a stable setup and familiar workflow can continue using WPF.

Why does v2rayN TUN mode require administrator privileges?

TUN mode creates a virtual network interface and changes system routes, which are system-level network operations and therefore usually require administrator privileges. If startup fails, close the client and run it again as an administrator, then check for leftover virtual interfaces of the same type. Company-managed devices may also be restricted by security policies, so an administrator may need to confirm the permitted scope.

03 / OPERATION

Usage Tips

After the client starts, you still need to decide how traffic reaches the core. The system proxy suits regular browsers and apps that follow system settings, while TUN is better when a broader takeover scope is needed. Choose between them according to the actual use case.

How should I choose between Global, Rule, and Direct modes?

Rule mode routes traffic according to domains, addresses, or rule sets and is suitable for everyday use. Global mode sends connections within the takeover scope through the current node and is useful for briefly isolating routing issues. Direct mode bypasses the node and can show whether a problem is related to the proxy path. Note the original mode before testing and restore it afterward.

What is the difference between a system proxy and TUN mode?

A system proxy exposes an HTTP or SOCKS entry to apps through the operating system’s proxy settings. It is easy to configure, but only apps that honor system proxy settings will use it. TUN mode uses a virtual network interface to take over a broader range of traffic, making it more effective for apps that ignore system proxies, but it also involves routing, DNS, and permissions. During troubleshooting, verify the system proxy first and enable TUN only when needed.

How do I decide which node to use?

Start by removing nodes that fail connection tests or time out frequently, then consider the exit region, protocol compatibility, and actual access performance. Ping reflects only part of the network path; real connection latency is closer to the time needed to establish the proxy connection, while download tests also measure bandwidth and server load. Do not rely on a single number—judge nodes by the target app’s actual connection results.

Will updating a subscription overwrite manually edited nodes?

Nodes in a subscription group usually follow the content returned by the provider. A later update may replace nodes with the same names or rebuild the group. For manual configurations that must be kept, copy them to a separate group and rename them so they are not mixed with subscription nodes. Routing rules and general client settings are usually stored separately, but confirm the current group before updating.

Can I use the same subscription on a computer and an Android device?

Most standard subscriptions can be imported separately into v2rayN and v2rayNG, but compatibility ultimately depends on the protocol fields in the subscription and the client core versions. Each device stores its own selected node, routing, and local port settings; subscription updates do not synchronize these local options. If a node fails on only one device, compare the core versions and transport parameters on both.

04 / DIAGNOSTICS

Troubleshooting

Narrow connection problems down through four scopes: one node, all nodes, one app, and all apps. Change only one variable at a time and preserve the first error in the client log so the issue can be reproduced and isolated.

How do I troubleshoot node tests that keep timing out?

Switch to other nodes in the same subscription first to determine whether the issue affects one node or all of them. Then check the local network, node address, port, protocol, transport method, and TLS parameters, and verify that the system time and time zone are correct. If every node times out at once, temporarily close other proxy applications and check the client log for the first connection error.

What should I do if the client connects successfully but webpages will not open?

Confirm that the active node is selected, then check whether the system proxy is enabled, whether the browser has its own proxy configured, and whether the routing mode sends the target address direct or blocks it. Try another node and test again. If domains fail while direct addresses work, focus on DNS settings. If every app fails, inspect the core log for handshake or routing errors.

How do I fix the v2rayN system proxy when it is not working?

Check that v2rayN has started the core and that the system proxy menu is set to enable the system proxy. Some apps use their own network settings or cache proxy parameters at startup, so fully quit and reopen them. If another proxy tool is running, the application started later may overwrite the proxy address. Close conflicting tools, set the proxy again, and verify the local listening port.

Why does a v2rayN subscription update fail?

Common causes include an incomplete subscription URL, an expired link, a network that cannot reach the URL, an incorrect system clock, or a response format the client cannot parse. First verify the URL and enabled status in subscription settings, then check the update log for the HTTP status or parsing message. Do not repeatedly create the same subscription, or duplicate groups may appear.

What should I do if TUN mode causes loss of internet access or DNS problems?

Disable TUN and restore the system proxy first to confirm that the basic connection still works. Then check the TUN virtual interface, DNS mode, and routing rules, and avoid having multiple VPNs or virtual adapters take over the default route at the same time. If the network does not recover after an abnormal client exit, close the related programs normally, restart the network interface, and enable TUN again with administrator privileges.
